Tournament Recap - USF Round Robin V & Kennel Kickoff 2019

USF Round Robin V

October 5 USF Men's Ultimate hosted our 5th annual Round Robin, USF uses this tournament as the last stage of their tryouts, before teams are split into Scallywags and Scourge. Richy Miller was captain for Team X and Vonterio Duncan was Captain for Team Y. The two captains drafted teams a week before the tournament. By the end of the draft each team had thirty people and they appeared to be balanced.

The games began at 9:00 am, both teams played four games, and had one bye round to rest. The competition consisted of Stetson, FAU, Ave Maria, Embry-Riddle, FGCU, and UCF. Both USF teams had a great day, Team Y made it through the day with only one loss, and Team X made it through the day undefeated, crushing every opponent they faced. As the headline game, USF X and Y combined teams to play UCF A team, a game that is always a chippy hard fought contest. A historic grudge match, both teams always play this game like there is something to prove, especially now USF is gunning hard for the top spot in Florida.

Kennel Kickoff 2019

The weekend of October 26 and 27, USF Scallywags and Scourge both competed in Kennel Kickoff 2019, the annual tournament hosted by UCF. This tournament is the first time this season the players of each team have played on their respective teams together. Scallywags went 3-1 on Saturday with their only loss to FSU-B and Friends, a team composed of FSU’s rookies and several alumni. This loss meant that Wags had to win the first game on Sunday, against the University of Florida, in order to make it to the championship bracket. Game one Sunday morning was hard fought on both sides, however Wags pulled through with an 9-8 universe win. Then they faced FSU-A in the semifinal game where Scallywags solidly beat FSU-A 12-7. Meanwhile in the other semifinal game, UF took UCF to universe point and won. Wags were to face UF in the championship game. Both teams came out hot, the score was quickly 2-2, the wags broke for the lead. By halftime, the score was 8-6, Wags were beginning to pull away. The final score was 12-9 Scallywags took first place at Kennel for the first time since 2010!

Scourge on the other hand had a tough weekend. They unfortunately faced only A teams during pool play. Starting off Saturday getting served a hot bagel by Florida State University. They then faced Miami, and then FAU with the scores being 3-11 and 2-12 respectively. In their final game on Saturday, they faced FGCU, where Scourge suffered a close but tough loss, 6-8 final score. Their first game Sunday, the last game of pool play, was against UCF-A. Scourge came out taking the lead playing a high variance strategy trying to put UCF-A off edge. While it worked in the beginning, unfortunately the fire was extinguished and the final score was 3-12. For their final game of Kennel, Scourge faced UNF. Scourge came out hot finding their groove and taking halftime 7-6, but alas the good times came to an end. Players fatigued from an arduous weekend of play and the heat of playing on turf the final score ended 8-10 UNF win. This year's young Scourge line up faced some solid competition and never folded. They have a long way to go and fortunately they have all season to become a true formidable threat in the state.
